Phase 2 - Excel

Phase 2 is quickly coming to a finish. I think I did well with this section. I was pretty confident in my skill level with Excel prior to starting this chapter, but quickly realized that there were so many features that I was only slightly familiar with.

We had a few spreadsheets assignments that helped with working with functions. I think I did pretty well, but realized that functions and formulas in Excel are very delicate and even the smallest mistakes can mess up the entire formula. Attention to detail has become even more important for this phase.

During the Excel chapter, we learned many things. Specifically, during 5.7.1 we learned about the differences between relative and absolute references. I have run into the problem in the past where the autofill function has not worked properly... and now I know why! This has been very useful outside of IS101 because I have been able use it at work while calculating damages for clients. I will continue to apply the skills I have learned to my daily work life and future school assignments.

I am excited to move on to Phase 3 and learn more about PowerPoint. I have the least amount of experience with PowerPoint and I think that clearly showed with the rough draft of my slideshow presentation. I always strive to do the best I can and get the highest achievement on an assignment that I can, so I think I will definitely do what is necessary to upgrade my mindset and habits for this next phase.

  1. Hey Katelyn, I agree with you when it comes to paying attention to detail to the Formulas and Functions of Excel. It is crucial that we read the problem carefully and clearly before starting on it.

  2. Phase 2 came went quicker than I had imagined. I am glad to see all your hard work is paying off. The skills we learned in Excel may be put to use daily at our jobs or personal use. Keep up the hard work and phase 3 will end successfully.

  3. Yes, functions and formulas in Excel are very delicate indeed!

Very glad to hear you found mastering the difference between relative and absolute references useful outside of IS101 :-)

I'm excited to see you achieve in Phase 3 and beyond, Katelyn ^_^

  4. Hi Katelyn! Attention to detail was definitely crucial during Phase 2 of Excel. For those spreadsheet assignments, it was satisfying to finally get a formula right after figuring out what was off. With your positive attitude, I’m sure you’ll do great in the final phases.

  5. Hello Katelyn!
It’s great how you turned those small formula frustrations into real learning moments, those details definitely matter in Excel! Sounds like you're heading into Phase 3 with the right mindset and a drive to grow, especially with PowerPoint. You've got this! ;-)

  6. Hey Katelyn,

I really enjoyed reading your Phase 2 reflection! It's impressive how you turned your initial confidence in Excel into an opportunity for deeper learning. Discovering the nuances of functions and formulas, especially the differences between relative and absolute references, can be a game-changer. It's great to hear that you're already applying these skills in your work, particularly in calculating damages for clients.

Your attention to detail and commitment to excellence are truly commendable. As you transition into Phase 3 and delve into PowerPoint, your proactive mindset will undoubtedly serve you well. Embracing new challenges with the same enthusiasm will lead to continued success.

Keep up the great work!! ^-^

  7. Hii Katelyn! I was in the same boat, a bit more of a sinking ship. I knew basic functions, but anything after was quite a journey to understand. Admittedly, I didn't realize the difference between absolute reference until the week before the exam (LOL), but yeah, I totally agree, so insanely useful! You are gonna absolutely blow us all away with the remainder of Phase 3!

  8. Hey Katelyn, Excel was definitely challenging for me, even though I had some experience with it. I really loved learning about absolute and relative references, it took me a while to understand the material and the logic, but once it clicked, I was quick with any assignment or task that involved cell references. I’m really glad I took this class because I’ve gained skills and knowledge I wouldn’t have otherwise, and the certification is definitely a bonus.

  9. Hello Katelyn, I had to sit down and make myself focus on details in this phase, and I'm not good with that skill at all. I know it’s a weakness of mine, and this phase tested my patience and skill.

Relative and absolute references were something I caught on to relatively easily after I realized when I used the fill handle and my cells didn’t do what I expected them to do.

If I'm not mistaken, I overheard you got a high score in the MO-310 exam, congrats! I believe you achieved exactly what you said you would!

  10. Great job reflecting on your experience with Phase 2! It’s awesome that you came in confident and still found room to grow Excel really does have a lot of hidden depth. I totally agree that even small mistakes in formulas can throw things off, and learning the difference between relative and absolute references was a big “aha” moment for me too. I’m sure you’ll do great in Phase 3, and I admire your dedication to improving and pushing for your best. You’ve got this!

  11. I also enjoyed phase 2, I found it the most challenging. I knew some about excel but apparently just the tip of the iceberg. Like you, this section made me learn the most. It made me slow down, read the instructions and take my time doing the work.

  12. I had no idea excel had so much to offer, especially because in high school they only show us Microsoft Word not Excel; well at least in my school. I had no idea how much we could do within just 1 cell but its a challenging, rewarding phase. It’s crazy just one little minor error and the formula doesn’t work so yes attention to detail is a must or it wont work. Glad you can use this outside of class so you can keep using your new skill.

  13. Hey Katelyn, I didn't think Excel would be as complex as it was so I very much understand but it was a real eye opener and was really cool to learn!
